Thunberg requested of King Gustav III to use the castle grounds, which were higher, as a garden for Uppsala University’s botanical garden. Karl Peter Thunberg determined that the university garden near the River Fyris was inadequate for many of the plants due to the marshy soil, flooding, unfavorable weather conditions that affected the garden and the lack of space. Thunberg was appointed professor of medicine and held that post until his death in 1828.
